THIS WEEK IN DOCTOR WHO - CANADA SERIES PREMIERE WEEK!
March 30, 2005 - Vol 8, No 13
The weekly guide to Doctor Who broadcasts worldwide.
by Benjamin F. Elliott
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho
Saturday 2 April:
BBC One - 7PM - Doctor Who: The End Of The World
BBC Three - 7:45PM - Doctor Who Confidential - Aliens: The Good, The
Bad, and The Ugly
Sunday 3 April:
BBC Three - 7PM - Doctor Who: The End Of The World
Tuesday 5 April:
CBC - 8PM - Doctor Who: Rose (Canadian premiere) (8:30PM
Newfoundland)
Congratulations to the new Doctor Who series and all involved. The
series won its timeslot on BBC One and the programmes on BBC Three
did very well for them. Ratings in the UK get refined as recordings
of the show are counted over the next week. Final results will be a
little higher assuming anyone recorded the show because they
couldn't see it live. Final numbers should be out from Barb
http://www.barb.co.uk next week.
UK Overnight Average Ratings (Premiere Weekend):
BBC1 26 March - Doctor Who: Rose - 9.9411 million average (43.20%
share)
BBC1 26 March - Doctor Who - A New Dimension - 4.05670 million
average (26.08% share)
BBC3 26 March - Doctor Who Confidential - Back From The Future -
820,630 thousand average (5.45% share)
BBC 3 27 March - Doctor Who: Rose - 484,020 (3.51% share)
Ok, that was under-reacting a bit. The ratings were FANTASTIC!!!!!
The BBC put up a news article about the ratings
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/tv_and_radio/4385801.stm .
The BBC's press campaign clearly paid off. 12 episodes to go.
Digital viewers in the UK noticed momentary sound problems on the
digital version of the BBC One broadcast, as audio from BBC Three's
Strictly Dance Fever tie-in show bled through. This was not present
on the Digital BBC One Scotland feed, as they were using a slightly
different version of the episode (no next week preview) to get done
in time for a football match. Analogue viewers apparently had no
sound problems, and BBC Three's Sunday encore had no problems.
Now there is the Canadian launch to look forward to. The aspect
ratio of the show has not been announced yet. Some areas of Canada
have an HDTV feed - if the CBC were to get the 16:9 widescreen
version of the show, it will air in full widescreen on this feed,
with 16:9 letterbox on analogue. Or the CBC might have a 14:9
version of the show like BBC One Analogue had. Tune in Tuesday to
the CBC and find out. Many cable and satellite viewers *in Canada*
have access to multiple time zone versions of the CBC, so hopefully
no one will miss the show.
Note: if you are trying to watch the CBC
http://www.cbc.ca/television from the US to see Doctor Who, be
advised. 1) Doctor Who is airing at 8PM in each time zone, not the
8PM Eastern/Pacific, 7PM Central Mountain that US networks like to
do. So in some areas you have to choose between Doctor Who and
American Idol, in other areas between Doctor Who and House. 2) Make
sure your local CBC station is in the same time zone as you - if not
Doctor Who could air at 7 or 9PM your time and you'd need to watch
at the right time or miss it. 3) CBC is not on any satellite systems
you are intended to get in the US - if you attempt to obtain
Canadian satellite service, you operate at your own risk. 4) If you
are much beyond the over the air reception range of a CBC station,
you will be unlikely to get CBC on cable - if you can get CBC over
the air, the chance of it also being on cable is good. While I
cannot get CBC here in Virginia, I hope everyone in the border parts
of the US (Seattle, Detroit, Buffalo, etc) who want to see Doctor
Who can.
Italy makes five. The Media Guardian website http://www.media.guardian.co.uk reports in an article on upcoming Doctor Who toy merchandise that Sky Italia's entertainment channel Canal Jimmy http://www.jimmy140.it has purchased the series (premiere date unknown). This makes the 5th broadcaster to agree to air the series to date (BBC One UK, CBC Canada, Prime TV New Zealand, Nederland 3 Netherlands, and Jimmy in Italy). It looks like the first cable/satellite only network to acquire the show - the other 4 broadcast over the air as well.
Shortly before this week's edition came out, I spotted a mention on the Outpost Gallifrey forum that Canal Jimmy also airs in France. The French Jimmy is http://www.canaljimmy.fr . The schedule is different, so it should not be assumed that Doctor Who will air on Jimmy in France just because it'll be on Jimmy http://www.jimmy140.it in Italy. We can't count France in the "bought Doctor Who" category yet, though at least parts of the country can get BBC One and see the show direct from the source.
As of this date, there has been no Australian sale. There is lots of speculation that ABC in Australia will buy the series after they have viewed and evaluated all 13 episodes, the latest from the Media Guardian article that noted the sale to Canal Jimmy.
